Compared to a year ago, the value of building permits in both the Calgary and Edmonton regions are down.

Statistics Canada reported on Tuesday that building permits in February in the Calgary census metropolitan were at $384.5 million, down by 27.3 per cent from last year. Month over month, the value fell by 5.3 per cent.

In the Edmonton census metropolitan area, total building permits were $344.3 million. That’s down 18.8 per cent from a year ago but up 2.5 per cent from the previous month.

Across Alberta, residential building permits were down 30.8 per cent from a year ago but up 0.1 per cent month over month to $560.8 million. Non-residential permits were $334.7 million, down 12.9 per cent month over month and by 35.4 per cent year over year.

Building permits declined across the country, according to the federal agency.

Total national building permits in the residential sector were $4.9 billion, down 8.5 per cent on a monthly basis and by 8.7 per cent on an annual basis.

Total national value of building permits in the non-residential sector fell by 0.5 per cent month over month and by 3.4 per cent year over year to $2.9 billion.
